      What is Dentistry?

Dentistry is the branch of medical science that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases related to the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaw. A dentist not only treats tooth pain and cavities but also manages oral infections, gum disorders, jaw problems, and overall oral health. In most cases, patients can directly visit a dentist, but sometimes a referral from a general physician may be advised based on the condition.

When you first visit a dentist, it is important to explain your symptoms clearly, such as tooth pain, bleeding gums, bad breath, swelling, or difficulty in chewing. Based on your complaints, the dentist performs a detailed oral and visual examination. This includes checking the teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and jaw to identify any abnormalities or signs of infection.

The dentist uses specialized instruments and dental mirrors along with proper lighting to examine the oral cavity thoroughly. Dental tools are designed to ensure comfort and safety during the examination. If you experience any discomfort or sensitivity during the procedure, you should immediately inform the dentist so that appropriate care or pain relief can be provided.

Tests and procedures performed during your first dental visit may vary depending on your condition and can include the following:

      Oral Examination:
This includes a complete inspection of the teeth, gums, tongue, palate, and jaw. The dentist checks for cavities, gum inflammation, plaque buildup, tooth alignment issues, and signs of oral infections or lesions.

      Dental X-Rays:
Dental X-rays help in detecting problems that are not visible to the naked eye, such as tooth decay between teeth, impacted teeth, bone loss, abscesses, or jaw-related issues. These X-rays use minimal radiation and provide quick results.

      Periodontal Evaluation:
This examination focuses on assessing the health of the gums. The dentist measures the depth of gum pockets to check for gum disease, bleeding, or bone deterioration around the teeth.

      Bite and Jaw Assessment:
The dentist evaluates how your upper and lower teeth fit together to identify bite problems, jaw pain, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders that may affect chewing or speech.

      Professional Dental Cleaning:
In some cases, the dentist may recommend scaling and polishing to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease.

Dentistry plays a vital role in maintaining not only oral health but also overall well-being. Regular dental check-ups help in early detection of problems and ensure healthy teeth, gums, and a confident smile.

      Reason to see an ENT:

Dental problems such as tooth pain, bleeding gums, or swelling should never be ignored. If left untreated, they can lead to serious infections, tooth loss, and other oral health complications. At PRK Hospitals, we provide advanced dental care with timely diagnosis and effective treatment.
